About SFR
SFR approach
My plans focus on doing the right kind of work to prepare you for your events or goals. I keep my focus on the big picture so you can focus on enjoying yourself. Data is extremely helpful, but is only a snapshot and never tells the whole story. When it comes to race day, adaptability and preparation will make you finish even the hardest races with grit and grace. At the end of the day, it's not about racing, it's about discovering who you are along the journey!
About me
I was never an athlete as a child and didn't compete in sports in high school or college. By the time I was 30, I was tipping the scales at 302lbs and would lose my breath just tying my shoes. I ultimately hit the wall and decided enough was enough. Long story short... as I started to lose weight through diet and exercise, I found that I truly loved moving. I made friends with similar interests and started picking their brains about how to get faster. I started strength training and cycling, and quickly found myself over-trained. On a suggestion, I got in the pool in an effort to maintain fitness while letting my body recover. I was headed down a slippery slope and before I knew it, I was racing triathlons. I am now more than 100lbs lighter and have completed over 30 triathlons including every distance from super sprint to full Ironman.
In 2011, I studied to be a a fitness instructor for my unit in the Army and have been writing running and strength plans covering everything from 5k's to 50k's since that time. After working with some friends to achieve their triathlon goals, I decided to expand and share my passion by helping others realize their dreams.
My approach is simple. This sport is fun and coaching should not be intimidating or make the sport more stressful. Your training needs to fit into your life. I will work with you to unlock your potential and prove to yourself that you're stronger than you ever thought possible.
If you're ready to get away from "cookie cutter" training plans and have a coach make a personal plan that can be adapted in real time as life shifts, shoot me a message and let's talk about how I can help you achieve your goals!
The story behind the name
I really have my wife to thank for the name "Smell Fast." The truth is that she is a very supportive wife who has an amazing amount of tolerance for me blabbing on and on about everything TRIATHLON!
Every time I finished a training session, I would be running my mouth about pace, heart rate, watts, wind, shoes, fueling, my legs, my feet, the weather, and how fast I was, and on and on. Well, after a few minutes of nodding at me and feigning interest she would just glaze over and in a sweet voice would say, "...well, you certainly smell fast!"
As you can imagine, the first time she said this, I was in tears from laughing so hard. This immediately became our thing and every time I needed to hit the showers, I was reminded that I "smell fast."
From that moment on, Smell Fast Racing was born.
Funny story about this picture...her shirt says she doesn't do triathlons, but she finally gave in and has recently become a triathlete! Now I can affectionately tell her that she smells fast too!
